Thomas J. Kohler and Sons is a family business founded in 1987 by Thomas J. This business grew out of a long family history of mechanical contractors, personal training and life experience. Tom’s grandfather founded his own mechanical contracting business in 1928. In 1963 Tom’s father founded his own plumbing heating and mechanical business after working for his father. Thomas J. Kohler entered the US Navy in 1976 and was trained to maintain gas turbines.
Tom’s training and experience in the Navy blurred the lines between electrical, plumbing and mechanical skill sets. After the Navy in 1980 Tom obtained a 2-year degree in business administration before entering a 4-year apprenticeship with the local International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. This lead to a position working at the Limerick Nuclear Plant and then later at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station as an Instrumentation and Control technician.
In 1987 Tom established Thomas J. Kohler Plumbing, Heating and Electric as a side business while wrapping up his employment with the power plant. In 1995 Tom resigned his position with the power plant to pursue his business full time. Since 1995 the business has continued to grow. Most recently, Tom Jr. has joined the family business.
